Disc golf and Widespread Panic—two things you might not immediately think go together. But for me, they pair perfectly, especially when I’m on the road chasing the band through new cities (and familiar ones too) for multi-night runs.

Whether I’m playing my local course back home or squeezing in a round before doors on the road, I always have music going—usually Panic—while enjoying the sport I’ve come to love. It’s the ideal way to get outside, get some exercise, and soak in a little nature.

There’s nothing better than waking up on a Saturday morning after a rowdy N1 show, grabbing your bag, and sweating out the alcohol (or whatever else…) with a peaceful round before jumping back into the madness. I always come back to the hotel or Airbnb feeling like a million bucks.

It’s even better if you can get a few friends from the crew to join. The camaraderie hits different when you’re slinging discs instead of just beers.

One of the great things about seeing Panic live is that almost every stop—whether it’s Asheville, Richmond, or even a small town like Brandon, MS—has a course nearby. And the best part? Disc golf is basically free, aside from a starter set of discs.

For the rest of this write-up, I’ll walk you through what disc golf is, some affordable gear to get started, and a few solid course picks in cities Panic will be hitting this year.

What is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is a pretty straightforward concept. Think of it like ball golf, but instead of a club and ball, you’re throwing a disc. Most courses are made up of 18 holes ranging from par 3s to par 5s. No carts—just you, your bag, and a walk through nature.

In traditional golf, there’s one basic way to swing. In disc golf, you’ve got options—backhand, forehand, or whatever feels natural coming out of your hand. And just like clubs, discs are made for different situations: you’ve got putters/approach discs, mid-ranges, fairway drivers, and distance drivers.

Discs also come in different plastic types. Cheaper plastics are less durable and scuff more easily, while higher-end options hold their shape and last longer. Each disc has a unique flight pattern, which is described by four numbers printed on it:

• Speed (1–14): How fast the disc needs to be thrown to perform as designed.

• Glide (1–7): How well the disc stays in the air.

• Turn (+1 to -5): How much it curves to the right (for right-handed backhand throwers) during the initial part of flight.

• Fade (0–5): How much it hooks left at the end of flight.

If you’re just getting started, don’t worry too much about these numbers yet. Focus on learning how your beginner-friendly discs fly out of your hand. Once you build consistency, those numbers will start to make more sense when you move into intermediate or pro-level discs.

One last thing: disc weights. They typically range from 120 grams (for kids or lighter throwers) to 180 grams (for advanced players with big arm speed). Most beginners—especially adult men—do best with discs in the 165g–172g range. I’ve been playing for four years and I still prefer that sweet spot.

Tony Rice wasn’t just one of the most influential flatpickers in bluegrass history — he was also one of the world’s most dedicated experts on a single, unusual timepiece: the Bulova Accutron Spaceview. Recognizable by its open dial and humming tuning fork movement, the Spaceview became part of Rice’s daily uniform for over 45 years. But what few outside his inner circle knew was that Rice also taught himself to service and repair these watches, eventually becoming a fixture in niche online forums under the alias Thunderbeing2007.

That legacy lives on — sometimes in the most unexpected ways. After a show at the Station Inn, guitarist Sunjae Won of Yellow Cottage / Country Gongbang received a gift that tied him directly to the Rice tradition.

We reached out to Sunjae to get the full story. I’m honored to share it with you.

Here is the story I’d like to share.

During our performance at the Station Inn, there was a song in our setlist that I sang—"Nine Pound Hammer." This song is one of my all-time favorites. I first came across it through a video of Tony Rice, and before performing it on stage, I shared with the audience that I had probably watched that video on YouTube over 10,000 times.

After the show, the owner of the Station Inn called me aside. He took off the Bulova watch he had been wearing and handed it to me, asking if I knew what kind of watch it was. As a longtime fan of Tony Rice, I immediately recognized it and told him so. Upon hearing this, he smiled and gave me the watch as a gift.

As a fan of Tony Rice, that moment was one I will never forget.

The emotion I felt that day is something I don't want to keep to myself. My dream is to become a great musician who travels the world, and one day, if I meet a remarkable young guitarist who moves me deeply with their playing—just as I was moved—I would like to pass this watch on to them and share with them the same inspiration I received.

Don’t let a single memory fade away. I try to keep that in mind the older I get. I do a lot of reflecting in my personal time, and many of the memories I cherish were made with friends I found through chasing music — and with family, in the woods, hunting.

My father has always been my hero. He’s larger than life to anyone who meets him. My love for music and hunting was born through him. He’s a staunch fan of old country music, and he passed that on to me. He’s also the best turkey hunter I’ve ever been in the woods with. A true-blooded houndsman.

On nights I can’t fall asleep, I replay hunts in my mind. Ones we’ve been on together. Ones I’ve been on by myself. Even the ones where we didn’t have success. I replay hunts where I can hear dogs in the distance, knowing they were my father’s. Those memories have made me into who I am today.

Colonel Tom Kelly once wrote that in your formative years, there are things that mark you — and if you’re lucky, you can remember them just as they happened. I am one of the lucky ones.

I’m also lucky I grew up around my grandfather, and on the land he grew up on himself — a blessing I’ll never take for granted. He was a hunter, a houndsman, an old-school man. Chewed tobacco and wore blue jeans every day of his life. Carried a bone-handled Case knife until the day he went to Glory.

I never saw him get angry. I never heard him say a curse word — or a bad word about anyone, for that matter. I wish I had those traits, but I do have the memories.

He had only one usable arm since birth, but it didn’t stop him from killing more deer than most people will ever see. I can’t look at a Browning shotgun without thinking of him. A 6’4”, 320-pound man who got as excited as a child when he stepped into the woods.

He was respected. He was honest. Most of all, he took me along and made sure I would have these memories. In my earliest years, I was his and my dad’s sidekick. I hope my son has the same feeling one day.

He learned those traits from his own father.

My great-grandfather left home at 15, walking. He came to his sister’s home in the town we now all still live in. He worked as a mechanic, saved enough to buy his own car lot, then a grocery store — and finally started and ran a sawmill.

During deer season, if someone told him they’d seen a track on one of the dirt roads around town, he’d shut down the mill, go get his hounds, and the whole crew would go hunting. My grandfather and his brothers would watch over the mill in his place.

When they complained about losing money by closing down, he’d say:

“If your work is interfering with your hunting, you’re working too much.”

I’ve had countless old-timers tell me about the kind of man he was. Respected. Honest. And like my grandfather — an outdoorsman.

Though we don’t run the mill anymore, we still meet up with family and friends every Saturday during deer season to turn the hounds loose and hunt. It’s something I’ll pass down to my son. Maybe one day, his son too.

Old Friends. Heroes. Lifetimes.

God’s Country, for me, is a place resting gently along the ever-winding river we call I-75. It’s a place considered by many to be the Reading Capital of the World. For others, it’s a quiet reminder of the long, infamous history of struggle within the agricultural industry.

Depending on your location, the history shifts. Not too far down the road, you’ll find echoes of the civil rights movement in the 229, the never-ending swamp with all its glory and danger in the 912, and the industrial booms that shaped the 478 area code.

For people like me, God’s Country is both a lifestyle and a place. A God’s Country lifestyle is about preserving the delicate, unique, and diverse history of the cotton and peanut belt of the contiguous 48 states (sorry, Hawaii and Alaska).

It’s about trial and error, fire and brimstone, and a forever-hint of grace that follows you for a lifetime. It’s about preserving and reviving the quail population in the woodlands. It’s about admiring God’s artwork every morning on the way to work. And more importantly, it’s about supporting your fellow man—no matter the reason why.

The place just so happens to be wherever that God-fearing man may be.

God’s Country isn’t for everyone—and unfortunately, not everyone will get to witness it in all its glory. Hank Williams Jr. said it best: “If I never see the pearly gates, I’ve walked through the promised land.”

Widespread Panic’s history with Chicago dates back to November 24, 1989, when they played Wise Fools Pub—a humble beginning that would mark the Windy City as a regular stop on their touring map.

This run feels different than the earlier 2025 shows. It kicks off midweek, on a Wednesday, and brings the band indoors to the storied Chicago Theatre—a venue known for its ornate charm and intimate acoustics, a stark contrast to the outdoor shows of this year.

Rumors are swirling about a possible sit-in from Billy Strings, adding even more buzz to an already anticipated stretch of shows.

Blind Tiger Pub

This pub has kept me fed, my glass full, and my heart happy for years. The name of the pub is derived from the name given to illegal drinking and gambling establishments in the late 1800s. The first “Blind Tiger” opened its doors in Charleston back in 1893, and since 1992 the Blind Tiger Pub has been a staple of downtown Charleston. I ate some of the best duck I’ve ever had at this bar after a snowstorm (yes, they can happen in SC). My friends and I drank immaculate frozen transfusions at this pub before the Saturday show of the 2023 run. Boy, that Donato character sure can play a guitar. What an awesome run!

A Charleston write-up for a Widespread Panic-centric publication would not be complete without discussing Home Team BBQ. The address for the first location is listed above; however, this fan favorite now has multiple locations across the Charleston area, so look for the spot closest to your Airbnb/hotel. Since 2006, Aaron Siegel and friends have been churning out a slew of South Carolina staples while growing across the state and country. Also, check their Instagram story before you order to make sure you do not miss out on any daily specials. Get a Gamechanger, and order the large one—you’re on vacation, act like it! You cannot go wrong with any items on their menu. Whenever friends come to visit and they want BBQ, we go to Home Team for Fried Ribs, Wings, Pork, Turkey, Hash & Rice, and a lot of Cerveza.

This recommendation will be a little bit different compared to the first two, as I will be using the geographical area of Shem Creek instead of a specific restaurant or bar. This waterfront strip is ripe with great libations and views. This area might truly have one of the best sunsets in Charleston, so be sure to stop by the next time you are in town to check that out! I have had great meals at Saltwater Cowboys, and Red’s Ice House is the perfect pregame spot for any event in life—like Zac and Sydney’s rehearsal party! I hope you have a blast at the shows this weekend, and congratulations on the baby!

Holy City Brewing

This is, without a doubt in my mind, the best brewery in Charleston. Those are fighting words in the Lowcountry, as there are a plethora of phenomenal breweries—but I do not care. Holy City makes some of the best beer in the South—the Hazy Dice IPA stands out in a clouded IPA field. The Paradise Session beer is perfect 24/7, 365. I like to start with the Painkiller first in the taproom, then I’ll move to one of the aforementioned beers, and the Pilsner is in constant rotation at my home. You truly cannot go wrong with any of the beer selections. Did I mention they have a raw bar?

Blackbeard had arrived from the Bahamas—the most feared pirate ever to haunt the Carolina coast—with a captured French slave ship, renamed the Queen Anne’s Revenge. She was nearly 100 feet long, armed with 40 cannons, and built to cross oceans.

He anchored near Sullivan’s Island and shut down Charles Town harbor without firing a shot. No ships in. No ships out. Over the next few days, he seized at least nine vessels and took hostages—including the son of a prominent city official.

Then came the message: deliver a chest of medicine, or the harbor burns.

Charleston folded. The ransom was paid. The hostages walked free.

Before long, Blackbeard sailed north to Bath, North Carolina—where he accepted a royal pardon and played at retirement. But the pardon quickly became a scandal. Locals whispered that Governor Charles Eden and his inner circle were on the take, turning a blind eye to piracy in exchange for gold, rum, or both.

And Blackbeard had already shown how he dealt with allies. He’d backdoored the “Gentleman Pirate” Stede Bonnet—commandeering his ship and stranding him ashore. (Yes, that Stede Bonnet—Stetson Bennett’s great x9 grandfather.)

But it didn’t last.

Within months, he was back at sea, hiding in the shoals of Ocracoke. On November 22, 1718, a British naval expedition—personally funded by Virginia Governor Alexander Spotswood—ambushed Blackbeard and his crew in a brutal battle off Ocracoke Island.

It took five bullets and twenty sword blows to bring him down. His head was cut off and mounted on a piling in Hampton, Virginia—a warning to anyone tempted to follow in his wake.

He died a pirate. But for one week in May, Charleston belonged to Blackbeard.

And she’s dealt with goons

Good people, I got dat Charleston Chest Fever! I love this town. Oysters, BBQ, cold beers, blonde women with rich parents, sunshine, salt air, redfish tailing in the flats. It speaks to me.

I’m sure most of you are aware: the band is also deep in their bag right now. That being said, our analysts predict the Holy City double-header to get nasty. I’ll have the hi-crown visor strapped tight.

Chucktown has seen every iteration of Panic from the T-Lavitz era to the current Jimmy Herring era. As with any panic hot spot in the South, the shows tend to be a little rowdier and the crowds tend to be a little drunker off the brown liquor. The band has graced the stage at 13 different venues in the city from small bars such as Myskyn’s Tavern, to large stadiums like the Credit One tennis coliseum, and even the local Port Authority building (07/30/91). For the younger panic fans like myself, it is most likely that you associate Panic in Charleston with that badass YouTube video of the Red Hot Mama from 10/05/13 in which Andy, Jake, and Joel from Umphrey’s McGee sit in. Maybe it’s just my algorithm, but I swear that video basically autoplays for me as the “Next Up” after any Panic video I watch on YouTube.

As the band gears up to play Charleston again for a 5th consecutive decade, this time feels different. Since the return of Panic after Jimmy’s battle against cancer was won decidedly by the White Wizard, the band seems to be operating on a higher level than anyone could have imagined. The 6-headed well-oiled machine has somehow gotten even tighter after the time away in the second half of 2024. The jams have been lengthy quests into places not always sought by the band. The transitions have been smoother than butter (and very unique combinations at that). Each member of the ensemble is firing on all cylinders and flexing their chops, all the while looking like they are having more fun together than ever before. It is no small feat for any band to be operating at this level as they approach their 40th anniversary. Very few touring acts have achieved the long term success that Widespread Panic has, and even fewer have continued to mesh together and sound better as they get older and wiser. That’s the beauty of this band. They never cease to stop innovating and trying new things while playing familiar venues and cities.

I wanted to do a write up for these Charleston shows for a couple of reasons. One of those is that I’ll be in attendance this weekend. The other is that I saw my first Panic show in Charleston in 2018 and I will always feel a connection to the city because of that. Shortly after the end of my Junior year at UGA, a few college buddies and I trucked up to Charleston to attend the first Trondossa Music Festival hosted by Panic (they need to bring Trondossa back). I had listened to the band some throughout my time at UGA thus far, but had never fully dove in and listened to every live release or attended a show. I remember going into the weekend really wanting to hear Airplane (sure enough they played it the second night of the festival on 05/06/18). Being naive and inexperienced, I wore a Boston Red Sox shirt and a Sea Island hat and probably looked like every douchebag college frat kid that I sneered at a few weeks ago on the lawn in Nashville.

Nevertheless, my buddies and I rolled into Riverfront Park with our heads in the right place and took in the opening acts beneath the Carolina sun. I had never seen Sturgill Simpson either, and he played the slot before Panic. Needless to say he rocked and was a great primer for the main act. It was in the middle of the first set that I knew I was hooked. The band played a joyful No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature that knocked my socks off. To be honest I didn’t know the song at the time but I could tell it would become a favorite of mine in the moment. At the end of the show (there were no encores at either Trondossa Festival), the band closed out the second set with a heavy Imitation Leather Shoes. I didn’t know that one either, but I fucking loved it. Fireworks were set off about halfway through the ILS and my dosed mind was filled with more serotonin than ever before in my life. I knew this band would become a part of my life from that moment forward.

Fast forward to April of 2019 at the second Trondossa Festival held again in North Charleston. I had a few more shows under my belt and understood more of what was going on this time around. One of my buddies invited a few girls he knew from high school that lived in Charleston to the first show with us that weekend. We spent the early afternoon at Home Team BBQ downtown (go there this weekend for the smoked wings and Gamechangers) and then headed out for the festival. Upon walking through the gates, there was a large stone rock setup with different crystals laying around it. A sign reading “take a crystal” invited all passersby to pick one that caught their eye and take it with them. One of the girls stopped for a second and chose a muted-pink colored crystal that she would later research and find out it was a “love crystal”. Lo and behold, that girl and I would start dating not long after and eventually get married. Panic brought me to my wife, a pretty cool aspect of my time spent seeing the band that I often remind my wife of when she complains about me going to another run.

Apologies for the length of this column. I started writing and just kept letting my thoughts pour out. I am just as excited to see Panic again in Charleston this weekend as I have ever been—that feeling never fades away.

The tour marked a rare international expansion for a band known more for marathon runs in the United States than for overseas performances. For many American fans, it was a once-in-a-lifetime trip. For European crowds, it was an introduction to a band already in its prime.

Train Days the Documentary

Train Days is a three-part fan-made documentary created by Adam Johnson. While it primarily follows American fans during the U.S. summer tour, it captures the broader spirit of 1999. European fans also appear, offering a glimpse into how Panic’s sound was received by new audiences across the continent.

Widespread Panic has not returned to Europe since 1999. Thanks to Train Days, fragments of that summer remain preserved. Will we ever see more Panic shows in Europe? Probably not—but it wouldn’t be fair to rule it out entirely.

Widespread Panic heads back to Charleston, following up their 2023 two-night run (5/5/23 | 5/6/23) at Credit One Stadium.

Panic has deep roots in South Carolina—playing over 150 shows across the state dating back to 1986.

Beers & Droning in NashVegas

It was 1 PM on a Friday in Nashvegas when the fear started settling in. The iced coffee and four bowls I had for “breakfast” was wearing off at an alarming clip. The recession special I ate at Robert’s the night prior was losing the battle to the myriad beers and substances I consumed beforehand.

A message from my good friend TedX confirmed what we both already knew: I needed a drink. I consult the Stop-Go Journal to assess food recommendations from my friend Truck. Breakfast? Ship has sailed. Sandwiches sound good but no alcohol is a non-starter. This next place looks a little pricy, then boom: there it is. A cozy basement English pub on Printer’s Alley, tucked away from the bright light and the rabble and the carnage and the Luke Bryan.

We walk in to “The Take Out” playing just loud enough to drown out the dread. This must be the place. My partner in grime and I sit at a stool. A couple of red ales and some uniquely fucked British appetizers appear before me. As my buddy eats his triple decker bacon on white toast sandwich, I scroll Panicstream and reflect on the night before.

Hazy memories come back like flash of neon: coconuts and porches and mountains and caterpillars and Telecasters, disapproving side eye from the bouncer at Legend’s, an ill-advised Uber to the smoke shop…. Dear lord.

“Yeah I’m gonna need another one of these red beers please.”

Some time later in the weekend, I shoot a message to this journal’s elusive founder trying to link for an adult beverage. Hingle doesn’t respond which is just as well because I’m back at Legend’s Corner for the 5th time this weekend asking my friends if they saw the reptilian beast destroying the Barstool Sports Bar & Grill during “Godzilla.” Terrifying shit but not nearly as spooky as the crew of seven in the marching upside-down “ƆIN∀Ԁ” hats.

One by one the extended crew drops boots at ACME. Indeterminate jam music plays on all floors as the hype builds for night 3. We speculate on bustouts and all play our favorite game: “Name One Million Panic Songs You’d Like To Hear.” We joke about wanting Sabbath but surrender to our likely fate of double Petty. Keep the expectations low and watch Panic blow ’em out of the fucking water.

That night on the lawn, I turn to see a 200-foot bottle of brown liquor being poured up from the sky. I hoped everyone else could see it too and this wasn’t some fucked psychedelic manifestation of my subconscious telling me to hit the bottle even harder. As the drone show transfigured into a woman, she seemed to dance and flow to the chop of the mandolin and the groove of the band. As dystopian as the surveillance drone/capitalist hellscape sky advertisement was, I had to admit that the whiskey and women light show was pretty on the nose for Panic.

The fans are transfixed until a final message from the sky gets ignored by everyone in attendance: PLEASE DRINK RESPONSIBLY.

Yeah right.

The second set of the last night was heavier than the appetizers at Jelly Roll’s bar and grill. Top to bottom gnarliness with a cute little reminder that it’s about love and joy jammed in the middle. The double Sabbath quickly had me disavowing both love and joy as the riff that invented heavy metal and spawned a million rip-offs melted out of Jimmy Herring’s cab. A one-two punch of heavy metal glory.

Tracers and fractals and hugs and laughs are shared before the encore. The final smokes of the weekend are fished out of pockets. A many-spirit-strong party unfolds into one last head-banging goodbye, then off we go into the neon night.

Springtime turkey hunting is an obsession of mine. I say obsession simply because that’s what it is. It’s nearly all I think about, and a conversation topic I will never turn down.

One particular hunt from this spring sticks out to me and will resonate on my soul forever.

It all started out as usual. Getting up as the clock struck 4:30, I crawled out of bed and walked downstairs to a cup of instant coffee. After gathering my gear and successfully not disturbing my wife or dogs, I set out on the same trail I have set out on many a time.

As I arrived to a piece of ground I am so fortunate to hunt, my mood quickly changed from tired and grouchy to anticipation and excitement. Any springtime turkey hunter knows this feeling—it’s nearly indescribable. I quickly gathered my vest, put on my boots, made sure my Thermacell—something everyone in the South should have—was burning hot, and set out to my listening spot.

Soon, the call of a whip-poor-will started, and just as the first hint of light from the East began to crack, the sounds of songbirds began to sing a tune that resonates with your soul just like a Jimmy Herring solo. The anticipation that had started out as a small ember was now burning inside with the hottest flame.

It was still early, but the birds here like to gobble early, and in that moment I heard a sound that burns the flames of anticipation in any turkey hunter brightest—a barred owl. Awaiting the sound we all know and love, I was deeply disappointed when there was no answer.

Knowing there were birds in this area, I simply knew I had to be patient, and with that in mind, I hooted back. To my surprise—nothing. After going back and forth with the barred owl for what seemed like ten minutes, I decided to switch locations. Surely one would sound off soon.

As I moved around hooting down different ridges, I made my way to the most surefire spot. As the dawn turned into early light and the last little bit of darkness left the sky, I pulled out another tool in my bag of tricks—an old hand-me-down crow call. Something many a friend has poked fun at me for having, but one that has worked many a time.

To my luck, after a quick but loud cadence, there was the familiar sound… a gobble! Then another. Two birds!

Knowing where they were located, I hurriedly made my way to cut the distance between us in half. After doing some yelps, I quickly went quiet—and just as they often do, so did they. The waiting began.

After what seemed like twenty minutes, I let out a string of yelps and clucks and was answered—this time by two gobbles that had gained some ground in the opposite direction. Getting up and knowing where they were headed, I was able to sneak around and get in front of them.

Not knowing exactly where they were, I let out a few cuts—and to my surprise, no answer. Still, I trusted the direction they were headed and moved to a spot that would give me the best advantage.

I don’t know what told me to stop, but I did—and on the third note of my first yelp, they cut me off! Hurriedly, I dove onto the ground and sat up against a very wide loblolly.

Just as I looked up, they gobbled again—much closer. Unfortunately, I had placed myself in the worst position. A patch of greenbriers was directly in front of me. Just as I gathered the courage to move, I heard a sound—the one noise every obsessed turkey hunter truly loves.

Drumming.

Drumming is a sound a gobbler makes in strut. It’s faint, but when they’re close, you can hear it. It almost sounds like a bass line. When they’re real close, you can feel it—and by this point, I could feel it.

And at that moment, as I peered through a hole in the greenbriers, there he was. Full strut, walking right at me. His feathers shone in the sun with as much beauty and grace as the harmony of a live Love Like Me. It was perfect.

He made his way across the lane in the back of a greenfield to about 30 or so steps. He then came out of strut and started looking around for the hen he had heard. After meticulously scanning for what seemed like an eternity, a simple whine from my mouth call made him look just a bit harder.

One swift lift of his head, and it was over in an instant. A flutter of feathers—and he was mine.

As I stood there over him, I did what I always do—I FaceTimed my wife. Once the moment was over and I was sure he had expired, I took him to where I had been sitting, plopped down, and let the adrenaline run through me, just soaking it all in.

After letting the nerves settle, I packed him up and back to the truck I went. In the heat of the moment, I hadn’t realized it—but as I was leaving, I turned around, and in a glance, I saw it.

There in its beauty—reminding me of a time when life was simple, and folks were kind. Surviving storms, logging, and construction—still standing…

GOOD EVENING LADIES AND GENTS! I’ll be giving the rundown on food and happy hour recommendations for upcoming Widespread Panic runs for the good people to consider checking out and enjoying. I’m really excited about the Nashville Food and Happy Hour Rundown—I’ve spent quite a bit of time in the city over the years, and it’s packed with fantastic dives for food and, of course, booze. I’ll make a point to cover all the daily meals—breakfast, lunch, dinner, and my go-to late-night snack spot—and I’ll also include my top happy hour picks. And no, I’m not going to give you my favorite hot chicken place because you’re gonna wait in line for an hour just to burn your bum up before the show. I plan on only setting y’all up for success. Now sit your ass down and let me learn you a thing or two…

PROPER BAGEL

Proper Bagel is a place that I have to hit any time I’m in Nashville. The menu is everything I want in a bagel shop. They keep the menu in line of what a bagel shop truly should be, by staying within New York tradition. Pork Roll? Got it. Mortadella? Got it. Fresh fish flown in from northern Atlantic waters daily? Got it. This place does typically have quite the wait but if you are looking for something easy to put down after a long night sitting around the kitchen table solving all the world’s problems and reflecting over last nights show with your squad…Then buddy, this is the place for you.

SUN DINER

Had to include Sun Diner as my second option. It just makes sense, chicken on the logo and diner in the name. Seems relatable for a Widespread Panic run in “The Music City”. What’s really cool about this place though is that they pay homage to the world famous “Sun Records” who were responsible for cutting record deals for artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and B.B. King. This place has a little bit of everything to satisfy a hungover Panic fan as it is a little bit heavier and heartier than the first option, but there are some lighter options on the menu as well. There is a full bar available here for the folks that want to keep the bender going though.

Short Rib Hash - potato hash, beer braised short ribs, caramelized onions, béarnaise sauce, provolone cheese, and topped with a runny egg and arugula.

Lunch Spots

FLEET STREET PUB

Let’s be honest with ourselves, who doesn’t like a classic English Pub? Fish and chips with an ice cold pint of Carlsberg has never done me wrong once in my life. Not a Carlsberg guy? GET THE DAMN CREAMER! Fleet Street is located in historic Printers Alley, which has tons of other great eats available, but for lunch…this one makes the top of my list with ease. Very low key place to grab good food and a beer with your crew. I know I already mentioned fish and chips, but this place has plenty of other options that are just as good, if not better. Take the trip to Printers Alley and hit this dark hollow of a pub.

BILL’S SANDWICH PALACE

At Bill’s you can go heavy or light. This place has some insanely good sandwiches that will fit any taste you might be in the mood for. They have a rotating sandwich menu and it isn’t super big, but when the sandwiches are as fresh tasting as they are at Bill’s, you don’t really have to have a huge menu. They always are running a sandwich of the day special as well which is always going to be delicious. They are only open Thursday thru Sunday and are only open for a few hours 11:00 to 3:00, but they do close at 2:00 on Sunday’s. Honestly there’s not too much you can say to hype up a sandwich place, but the quality of the meat, bread, and house made spreads will speak for itself. With that being said…just go. It is important to note that there is no alcohol at this sandwich shop. But these sandwiches are so good, you won’t even be thinking about alcohol. Plus, it's Nashville, there’s probably a bar within a few steps you can hit immediately after, you degenerate.

Ode To Big Bob - Crispy chicken thigh, BBQ dry rub, Alabama white sauce, spicy dill pickles, white onion, lettuce, on a garlic butter toasted Charpier’s sesame seed bun.

Happy Hour -> Dinner

BLACK RABBIT

If there is any place you are going to go to on this entire list of places I’m naming, you need to go here. I can’t stress this enough. Black Rabbit is the best bang for your buck when it comes to happy hour. They make high quality drinks at a surprisingly cheap happy hour price. All happy hour liquor drinks are $6 and ALL beers are $2 off regular menu price. If I am ever in Nashville, this is the one place I will always go out of my way to make it to. Happy hour is from 4:00 - 6:00 Monday - Friday and on Saturday happy hour goes from 10:00AM - 6:00PM…so all day long on Saturday. They blast some great tunes for happy hour. The owners are big Panic fans. I actually found out about this place on Panic Stream about 5 years back from the owner himself. Don’t let the fancy decor scare you away. This place is chill and easy going. If you are hungry, the happy hour pork tacos are fantastic to pair with the drinks and an order of 2 is only $8 but they are only at that price from 4 - 6. If the drinks are flowing, tunes are good, and you have enough time and room in your stomach before hitting the show, make sure to stay for dinner. It is on the pricier side after happy hour ends, but the food will not disappoint one bit. They have an open pit wood fired grill in the middle of the restaurant where they serve up incredible grilled meats such as steaks, pork chops, fresh trout, and even elk. It’s ok to spoil yourself on a run at least one night. This is the place. Now go get after it!

(HAPPY HOUR PICKS: Depends on my mood. But it would be between the $6 Old Fashioned or the $6 Margarita. You will not get this high quality of a drink anywhere else in Nashville for $6. Get an order of pork tacos too.)

THE RED DOOR SALOON (MIDTOWN)

Red Door Saloon is going to be my more casual low key pick for happy hour and dinner. It’s ok to go in blind for this one, they have a full bar and almost anything you can think of to eat. They have a very eclectic menu that features way above average bar food. They have been in business since 2002 and now they have 3 locations…but make sure to go to the Midtown location because they are the OG. This place is famous for their bushwhackers (Red’s Whacker) and they are amazing. But for the people that like a 1-2-punch, order the Chicago Handshake a few different times during your visit (Can of Old Style and a shot of Malort). They have all day happy hour specials that last until 7:00 every evening. Outdoor seating is also available here as well. So if you are feeling something casual and a little more divey before the show, definitely go check this place out!

Late Night Snack

ROBERT’S WESTERN WORLD

Guthrie Trapp, Brent Mason, JD Simo, Daniel Donato…any of these names ring a bell? Well of course they do! These great guitarists all got their start at Robert’s Western World by playing with the world famous honky tonk dive bar band, “The Don Kelley Band”. Other than absolutely ripping guitars all these musicians have one very important thing in common…they all ate the “Recession Special” at Robert’s late night Honky Tonk Grill. What is the recession special you might ask? It’s a fried bologna sandwich, served with chips, a MoonPie, and an ice cold PBR for only $6…yes all that for $6! If you think you’re too good for a fried bologna sando, a MoonPie, and a PBR though…(you’re not) Then I guess you could get your hands on some of their other late night Honky Tonk Grill options. People also rave over the chicken tenders, but I can’t speak for those because I’m not too good for a proper recession special. Head to Robert’s for one hell of a post show after party with great music and delicious late night grub!

1. Wash with Nikwax Tech Wash – This removes dirt, sweat, and residue without damaging the fabric or the water-repellent finish.

2. Lightly air dry or tumble for a few minutes – Get the jacket to a damp-but-not-soaking state. This helps the spray stick better and absorb more evenly.
